At London Natural History Museum, the zoological counterpart to anatomist Gunther von Hagens ; Body Worlds exhibit opens Friday, April 6. This plastinated menagerie is Animal Inside Out, a collection of one-hundred preserved animals with their skin peeled way back. It is inevitable that some ne ;er-do-wells will arrive at this exhibit stoned out of their gourds, only to be later escorted from the museum in fetal positions. Here the rundown on Hagens ; plastination process: It involves extractin stanley website g all water and fatty tissues from the specimen and replaci stanley cup ng them with polymers in a vacuum. The plastination process stops the decay of dead bodies and prepares specimens for scientific and medical education. It is an odourless form of preservation and lasts a long time [ 8230;] None of the animals in the exhibitio stanley usa n have been killed for the purposes of plastination. The Museum has undertaken due diligence to ensure that all the specimens comply with best collections practice. Among the naked fauna on display at Animal Inside Out are a porbeagle shark made entirely out of capillaries, a giant squid, a foal digestive tract, a giraffe sliced up like cold cuts, and an elephant with its musculature completely exposed. You can find more information about the exhibit here. A photographer from NotCot was also able to sneak in early and snap some fascinating albeit morbid shots 鈥?check out more photos here. When the Lytro light field camera made its way into the hands of consumers earlier this year, it did something no camera had previously done: absorb all the light rays in its field of view, making it stanley usa possible to refocus the image anywhere the photographer desired. But its controls were perhaps intentionally simplisitic, which meant that hardcore photgraphers lacked control over the fine details they ;re normally used to. https://gizmodo/lytro-light-field-camera...ke-5890028 Now that the world has had time with the Lytro, and Lytro has had more time to work on the firmware, there a new feature which will be available to all Lytro owners via Software update: ISO and Shutter Speed are fully manual, and there now a neutral density filter which gives you control over how much light the camera takes in essentially an exposure control . Shutter speed ranges from 1/250 seconds to 8 seconds, while ISO goes from 80-3200. When adjusting for one, the other value automatically changes to compensate. What these new features mean for you, the consumer, is that the Lytro will now have improved low light pe stanley mug rformance, along with the ability to pull off some slick high-speed photography tricks. See below. And because Lytro also added an auto exposure lock, you don ;t have to worry about refocusing the shot and losing the light metering you want. The 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic was one of the worst disease outbreaks ever seen, leading to the death of some 50 million individuals across the globe. It was stanley uk also the first H1N1 global outbreak 鈥?its followup in 2009 was decidedly less potent, at least in part because of advances in medical science since then. Now researchers have gone back to the months before the 1918 outbreak, and have found evidence that the flu was killing before people even knew what was stanley cup going on. The scientists examined clinical and pathology records, including available autopsy material, for 68 military personnel who succumbed to influenza or pneumonia between May and October of 1918 鈥?this was months before the pandemic was acknowledged or had peaked. What they found was that these dead had exactly the same virus as those killed by it later, and that there was no mutation to explain its sudden high mortality rate or ease of transmission. Usually, if a virus suddenly becomes massively more dangerous, there a change in its form that can be attributed the cause. Instead, the Spanish Flu was exactly the same when it was quietly killing the occasional serviceman, and when it was rampaging around the world in one od the deadliest disasters in human history. So while we still don ;t know exactly what caused the disease to go pandemic, this information at least sheds some light on the build-up t stanley quencher o it doing so. A couple weeks ago, astronomers spotted black holes that were ten billion times more massive than our Sun, setting new records for the biggest black holes ever found. NASA has spotted another record-setting black hole 8230;although it not quite as impressive. The black hole is part of a binary system with the catchy name IGR J17091-3624. It shares the system with a normal star, from which the black hole leeches gas to create a massive disk of material around it you can see it in the artist conception up top. The gas is heated to millions of degrees and begins to emit X-rays. By comparing the cyclic X-ray patterns known as heartbeats- emitted from this disk with that around another black hole, we can estimate the mass of IGR J17091-3624. The other black hole, GRS 1915+105, is estimated to be about 14 times the Sun mass, which is nearing the upper limit for a black hole formed from the collapse of a single star. Using NASA Rossi X stanley cups -ray Timing Explorer RXTE , astronomers were able to determine that IG stanley uk R J17091-3624 was much, much smaller. In fac stanley cup website t, it probably only three times as massive as the Sun, which is dangerously close to the minimum amount of mass needed to create a black hole in the first place. In other words, this is the first disturbingly strong evidence that fish are developing skin cancer from ultraviolet radiation outside of a research laboratory. Three coral trout with black patches of skin characteristic of melanoma can be seen up top. A healthy coral trout, pictured below, shows what these fish normally look like. Writes Science NOW Krystnell Storr: Scientists know how to give fish skin cancer in the lab. They breed a swordtail and a platyfish, both common pets, to create offspring that are more sensitive to UV light. The reason is genetic. Platyfish have a so-called tumor gene and a regulator to control it, whereas swordtails have neither. When the two mate, their offspring will stanley cup sometimes inherit only the tumor gene without the regulator, leading to increased incidence of various cancers. The rise of autopilot and other automated technologies in commercial airliners are rendering pilots into incompeten stanley uk t drones. The AP attributes part of this trend to FAA regul stanley flask ations, which force pilots to keep the autopilot turned on for all bu stanley mug t a few minutes of the flight namely take off and landing , depriving pilots of opportunity to fly with manual controls. A draft FAA study found pilots sometimes abdicate too much responsibility to automated systems. Because these systems are so integrated in today planes, one malfunctioning piece of equipment or a single bad computer instruction can suddenly cascade into a series of other failures, unnerving pilots who have been trained to rely on the equipment. The study examined 46 accidents and major incidents, 734 voluntary reports by pilots and others as well as data from more than 9,000 flights in which a safety official rode in the cockpit to observe pilots in action. It found that in more than 60 percent of accidents, and 30 percent of major incidents, pilots had trouble manually flying the plane or made mistakes with automated flight controls.
