KATU reports that firefighters couldn ;t move to put out a house fire over the weekend in Portland, Oregon because a 69-year-old man was parading around outside wielding a sword and shield. After police arrived at the scene, they tried to talk reason into the man, but when he was unresponsive the police tasered him, and carried him away to safety. Firefigh stanley uk ters then moved into the house and put out the fire. Inside, they discovere stanley cup d a dog suffering illness from smoke inhalation. The dog was saved using a special doggie oxygen mask. This is the second time this month that police have been called to this house to deal with the same man, who suffers from mental illness. Both he and the dog are expected to recover. Hopefully after causing all of this ruckus, this guy will stanley mug get the treatment he needs. [KATU via NTDWA] Welcome to Gizmodo winter break! Until NASA spacecraft MESSENGER took up orbit around Mercury last year, the surface of the solar system innermost planet was a great mystery. Now we ;ve gotten a good look 鈥?and we have no idea what we ;re looking at. These features spotted by MESSENGER have been dubbed hollows. Though they don ;t actually glow bluish green like that, they are still plenty strange. While at first glance they look like craters, their shapes couldn ;t actually be formed by meteorite impacts, partially because most of them are actually inside actual impact craters. Astronomers haven 821 stanley cup 7;t spotted anything like this stanley cup on the Moon or anywhere else in the solar system, and so whatever is creating these strange hollows must be unique to Mercury. In a new paper exploring the hollows, a team of NASA scientists offer this description of the hollows: High-resolution images of Mercury surface from orbit reveal that many bright deposits within impact craters exhibit fresh-appearing, irregular, shallow, rimless depressions. The depressions, or hollows, range from tens of meters to a few kilometers across, and many have high-reflectance interiors and halos. The host rocks, which are associated with crater central peaks, peak rings, floors, and walls, are interpreted to have been excavated from depth by the crater-forming process. The best explanation for these hollo stanley vattenflaska ws is that these depressions actually formed through the forced removal of the mat
