A new discovery could rewrite the history books on the Milky Way. According to a new study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, our galaxy absorbed a smaller satellite galaxy several million years ago. But more than that, it was a celestial event that culminated in the meeting of each galaxy central black holes. The ensuing collision resulted in a cataclysmic event that blasted a swath of old stars straight out of the core region at hypervelocity speeds. The theory, put forth by Kelly Holley-B stanley cup ockelmann of Vanderbilt and Tamara Bogdanovi膰 of Georgia Tech suggests that our galaxy has had a violent past 鈥?and it may not have been the only encounter like it over the course of its history. A Fermi problem Holley-Bockelmann and Bogdanovi膰 started to suspect something after studying Fermi Bubbles 鈥?two giant lobes of extremely energetic diffuse gamma-ray light that are bursting from the cent stanley tumbler er of the galaxy straight above and below the galactic plane. Right now, each lobe is about 25,000 light years across, Holley-Bockelmann told io9. Scientists know that gamma-ray light comes from the most energetic physics known, but we still don ;t completely understand what made these stanley cup bubbles. The astronomers suspect that particles erupted from the galactic center at nearly the speed of light, and then slammed into the ambient interstellar gas 鈥?a high-speed collision energetic enough to make just this kind of gamma ray. Yes, but no more than listening to Justin Bieber. The misconception that there something unique about Mozart ability to increase brainpower began in 1993, with a paper in Nature. Neurobiologists Gordon Shaw, Frances Rauscher and Katherine Ky of the University of California at Irvine found that students who listened to 10 minutes of a Mozart sonata demonstrated a temporary increase in spatial-temporal reasoning, as measured by an IQ test. The public seized on the romantic idea that listening to Mozart would make them smarter, and Don Campbell, a teacher and music e stanley quencher ducator from Texas, capitalized on the notion with an international bestseller, The Mozart Effect. But Glenn Schellenberg, a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, says that there is no Mozart effect. Any number of experiences besides listening to music might improve cognition. Most people find the music of Mozart pleasant to listen to, and it might increase dopamine levels in the brain, which is generally thought to improve cognition. But eating chocolate might have the same effect, Schellenber gourde stanley g says. In 2010, a team of Austrian researchers analyzed the results from 39 attempts to replicate the Mozart effect. In most, a group of subjects listened to a Mozart sonata before testing their spatial intelligence. Doors are some seriously ancient tech but they have this problem where they can only keep people out if they ;re closed. This system, which Barbecan calls the Linear Revolving Door works by encasing every entrant to a building within his or her own little private cell on the way in. While they ;re in there, sensors check for guns or bombs or whatever bad news you might be able to detect, and if the results are positive, the linear revolving door can either trap the target in there, or reverse to spit him out.
