Plants, algae, and bacteria have a clear advantage over the animal kingdom when it comes to their powers of photosynthesis. While the climate on the surface of Mars is pretty much completely dry, it still possible that, every so often, it snows on Mars. These hellish storms would move at hurricane speeds and dump four inches of snow every hour Mineral evidence collected on Mars suggests that small lakes do occasionally form on Mars. This hasn ;t happened often during the Martian drought, which has lasted for 3.5 billion years or so, but it appears these lakes form when meteo stanley cup usa rite impacts warm up ice in the planet crust and forces them through cracks up to the surfac stanley cups e, resulting in short-lived crater lakes. The thing is, even a very tiny lake would have a massive effect on the entire planet because Mars atmosphere is so thin. In the simulations the heat given off by this tiny lake threw the entire planet atmosphere into a frenzy, issuing forth a column of warm, moist air traveling at 120 miles per hour. Here where things get interesting. As the furious plume began to freeze into ice, the storm cloud that formed extended up to 20 miles high. By contrast, Earth storm clouds only reach up about 12 miles because the ozone layer heats the upper atmosphere and dissipates the clouds. Getting microscopic objects into formation is a tricky stanley website proposition stanley cup . They don ;t make tweezers small enough. Fortunately there an alternative: sweeping them up in a sonic vortex. In a recent experiement, researchers at the University of Bristol Department of Mechanical Engineering and the University of Dundee Institute for Medical Science and Technology managed to catch tiny particles in a sonic lasso and gentle coax them into position a short distance away for the first time. They pulled it off by surrounding the target particle with a ring of 16 ultrasound sources which spat out the swirling vortex, catching the particle inside. And after that it a just a matter of moving the lasso. Bruce Drinkwater, Professor of Ultrasonics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and leader of the study, described it this way: Our research has shown we can grip and move particles pretty much anywhere and along any path. The impressive thing is that it is completely non-contact, harmless and so ideal for moving delicate things, such as cells, around under a microscope. With further development this could be used to assemble human tissue as part of a tissue engineering production line. As such, it seems as though twinning is at best something of an evolutionary accident, and to some degree it surprising that it has persisted in our species. It provides a unique data set for populations without good access to medical care, and Richard says it reveals the solution to the twin mystery. According to the data, single babies born after their mother gave birth to twins were eight ounces heavier than average. In these circumstances, a heavier baby is pretty much always going to have a survival advantage and be more likely to survive infancy.
