The following is a transcript of an interview with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg that aired on Face the Nation on July 30, 2023.MARGARET BRENNAN: We turn now to the ongoing heatwave, which has put much of the southeastern United States under dangerous heat alerts from Florida to Texas. San Antonio has set a record high heat index this month. And its Mayor, Ron Nirenberg joins us with more. Good morning to you, Mr. Mayor.MAYOR RON NI stanley mug RENBERG: Morning, Margaret. MARGARET BRENNAN: What has been the impact of this high heat The demand for electricity What is it doing to your community MAYOR NIRENBERG: Well we continue to set records every week with respect to electric- electricity demand. Our emergency calls for heat exhaustion, heat illness are up 50% since last year, which itself was a record breaker. So it is a dangerous heatwave that we re expe stanley drinking cup riencing with- with just an unrelenting day after day heat exposure. So we re certainly grateful for stanley mugs a president now that s treating this heatwave with the urgency that I think is necessary. Especially given the fact that one of the challenges that we have is, cities in Texas are fighting our legislature and our state government for local control. We re trying to protect residents and workers, and they are doing everything they can to prevent that from happening. AP As we noted this morning, Republican presidential candidate John McCain told an Associated Press reporter over the weekend that he is Baptist, not Episcopalian. McCain has long attended a Baptist church in his home state of Arizona, but until this weekend he had publicly identified himself as Episcopalian. Now McCain has told reporters that what ultimately matters is his overarching faith. The most important thing is that I am a Christian, he said. The McCain story comes on the heels of Fred Thompson s acknowledgment last week that he is not a regular churchgoer stanley italia and is not comfortable talking about faith on the stump. As for the other frontrunners, former New York m stanley cup ayor Rudy Giuliani has, by and large, not stressed his faith on the campaign trail, while former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has had to deal with a number of questions about his Mormonism, which he has not made a centerpiece of his campaign.In fact, it has thus far fallen to the candidates with lower poll numbers to duke it out over who has the most legitimate religious bona fides. At the beginning of August, Sen. Sam Brownback s campaign accused Gov. Mike Huckabee s supporters of an anti-Catho stanley us lic whisper campaign. And along with Tom Tancredo, the pair indicated at a GOP debate in May that they do not believe in evolution. Alan Keyes, who entered the race today, is also expected to make his faith an important aspect of his campaign.
