Today, the grocery delivery battle is being waged between companies like Amazon, Walma asics sneaker rt, Target, FreshDirect, and Instacart. But there once was a time when the most futuristic thing in food shopping was the car. Specifically, drive-in shopping like these stores from the 1920s. The car was invented in the 1890s, but it wasnt until the 1920s that average Americans started to buy them in droves. The rise of the car created plenty of problems, of course, like a huge spike in deaths from auto accidents and incredible traffic jams鈥攁ccording to the L.A. Times, it took 30 minutes to move just six blocks in downtown Los Angeles during the summer of 1923. But there were also some interesting innovations that came out of this period, like the drive-through retail shop. The December 1928 issue of the technology magazine Science and Invention included this illustration of the futuristic shopping experience. And its kind of cool to see from an era when the car was actually seen as a progressive mode of transport yeezy ation. Strangely, the magazine doesnt explain where this new store design was attempted. And it couldve been anywhere in yeezy foam the U.S., really. But as Ive learned from the fantastic book The Drive-In, The Supermarket, and the Transformation of Commercial Space in Los Angeles, 1914-1941 by Richard Longstreth, a lot of the innovations in car-centric spaces were happening in Los Angeles during this time鈥攊f for no other reason than the weather is pleasant year-round. China Mi茅ville is known for some strange and often brilliant works of speculative fiction. His latest book, This Census-Taker, is an intriguing look at a horrific world through the eyes of a young boy, and its no less strange and brilliant than his other works. Mi茅villes unnamed narrator recounts a story from his childhood, starting when he ran away from his home convinced that his mother did somet air force 1 hing terrible. But thats not quite it. Its his mother that vanishes, and its his father that hes seen commit horrific acts: killing animals, and probably people. After the boys escape to a nearby village, hes told that theres nothing that can be done about the situation without proof, and hes sent back home again. Theres a wonderful sense of foreboding with this novella: it lingers in Mi茅villes descriptions, dialogue and characters, and its a book that leaves more questions unasked than answered. Becaus crocs winterstiefel e of that, itll be a nike sb dunk frustrating read for some. This isnt a book that has easy or clear answers for the world or questions that Mi茅ville has put together. Thats probably for the best, because the fantastic stuff isnt really the point here it would distract from the fascinating, minimalist approach thats been laid down here. Told through the lens of the memory of a young boy, theres the sense that the events and world that we see here are slightly off interpreted without context.
